Before Rehearsal.

A few random pics before they were off to rehearse (and I was off to play around the pier).

Meet the cuz. Philip. Groom to be. Yes. He made this face in most of the photos. We are indeed related.

Meet 17 month old Leon. Son of the Bride to be, Christin, who is standing behind. This was baby Leon's reaction to the sound of my camera shutter going off.

Clinging tightly to Trac-tor (everything with wheels is tractor) as the fascination with my camera grew. Wait...for it... wait.. for it...

DSC_0037E
Yup. There it is. Luckily he responded very well to me telling him "Nein".  Oh yes. That's another thing....

DSC_0043E
All the while I thought he was speaking babytalk to me and a few baby words...turns out as a result of his mother being a native German....

DSC_0044E
He was actually speaking German... no.. not babytalk... saying words like "please" "thank you" "open" "let me see" "grandpa" "food" etc.... Hello Angela. He is a German baby. He speaks German. Oh yeah and some English too. Cause thats how they do it over there in Europe.

Papa and Trac-tor (pronounced just like that). Gah. Look at that face. How do you say "Nein" to that face?

Groom to be and best-man to be. Couple of army guys smokin' in the back yard.

Uncle Merle. Or wait here let's practice our German. This is "Opa" to baby Leon. :)

The House + Old Keepsakes

After I saw the lovely scene on the previous post. I went downstairs to try to get shots of all the things I had seen the evening before and didn't get a shot of.

DSC_0534E
The first thing I noticed upon entering their home. Beautiful natural light. What every photographer wishes for.

DSC_0535E
My Aunt Annie had told me they had been working very hard to redo their home. I have no idea what it looked like before, but I think her and my uncle have done a pretty good job so far.

Then I noticed this photo hanging on the wall next to the desk. It resembled my uncles so much that I wasn't sure who it was. I wasn't sure if it was a picture of them in their younger days or maybe it wasn't even a picture of anyone related to me. When my uncle noticed me examining it, he informed me that this was my grandpa Comer. I had only seen a couple of pictures of him (he passed away before I was born) so it surprised me and shed a little light on what
he truly looked like.

I looked over my shoulder and was suddenly mesmerized by this picture. I immediately knew who it was but made sure and asked my uncle for confirmation. I had known from my photography classes the time period when they used to hand color photos like this (i have a kit of my own and loved it in the darkroom course I took). I just knew this had to be my grandma Comer. I never got the pleasure of meeting her, but I had heard so many beautiful stories from my aunts and uncles that it immediately fascinated me and I had to get a picture. I had seen pictures of her before but only from her later years. I may be biased, but I think this photo is beautiful.

As my uncle got more into showing me the rest of the old photos in the house and telling me the background stories behind them (which were all fascinating), I continued to snap shots of the house.

My Uncle Merle in the dining room talking to me about the old photos and also answering my questions about what all they have done to the house.

That's when he led me to a framed chocolate cake recipe of my grandmothers, along with her rolling pin and her cookbook. Obviously it isn't difficult to realize what an important person my grandmother was to my aunts and uncles. I was amazed at the care and presentation in which these keepsakes were put on display. She must have been a very special person to them. I was later told this is the cookbook that my aunts learned how to cook out of.

It got me thinking about what items are special enough to me to put on careful display. There are so many things I have that are so special, but hidden away in a box of memories somewhere. It inspired me to want to get them out on display as as a sign of my affection for them.

Trip to Rhode Island. Part 1.

Because I am in the process of editing hundreds of photos from my trip, I thought that I would slowly post them as the progression goes a long instead of having one giant mega post.

I recently went to Rhode Island to visit an Aunt and Uncle of mine and to attend my cousin's wedding. I designed the wedding invites, so it only seemed natural that I should attend the wedding, right? My Aunt Annie is the younger sister of my father. She lived in Germany most of my childhood so I never really got to know her as a kid, I would just hear these vague stories about her, and every once in a while be told that I slightly resembled her.

Anyway we recently got reacquainted during a visit she made to Oklahoma. For me, and for my brother as well, the passing of our father has made our time with his brothers and sisters all the more special for us. I am glad I had the opportunity to go visit and be a part of the special celebration of the marriage of my cousin.

So there is the background story on that...

Unfortunately when I arrived in Rhode Island the battery for my camera was dead. So I wasn't able to snap any photos until the next morning. This is the scene I awoke to the next morning with a newly charged camera battery. My Aunt Annie (Nana to baby Leon) putting her new grandson to nap. It is just too beautiful of a scene not to share. I was able to snap this through the crack in the door when she wasn't looking. It's lovely the things you capture when no one is looking.

RIP Teacup McRattie

As you may already know, her sister, whistle, passed away a few months ago. Today the vet and I decided the kindest thing to do would be to put her to sleep. She just became extremely ill with pneumonia and was very old in rattie years (3years). It was very calm and peaceful and she will be missed.

Teacup is pictured on the left, Whistle on the right.

Greer's Bday celebration at Lake Tenkiller

The weekend before last was my friend Greer's Bday weekend. She had just gotten back from Hawaii and decided she wanted a lil time away with some close friends. So we decided to make a road trip of it. Of course I had just gotten my new camera just a few days before so I figured it was a perfect time to test it out.

This was a test shot of the road on the way there. I probably took about 20 shots before I got an exposure I was happy with. I was still getting used to setting up all my manual settings again. I hadn't used a camera capable of manual settings in years. It was tricky getting the road to show up without the sky being completely overexposed.

Upon further inspection of the contents of Erich's suitcase, this is what was found. Note the Emergen-C. Because he likes to stay healthy and all. This pretty much set the tone for the rest of the weekend.

And another test shot. One of many.

This is what sunroofs are for.

Converse sneaks that have been around the world. Took me a while to get that exposure as well.

<3>

A lil self portrait.

The first thing I saw when we got out on the deck of the lakehouse.

The deck we spent all weekend on.

Beautiful.

I think Greer may have been having a good time.

Erich sneaked this one.

My favorite photo of the weekend. I love sunset light.

And there it goes.

Time to make incredibly strong pitcher of shots to be had all weekend.

And play some pool.

Next morning early sun.

A heartwarming gift Shelly got from Chris. (pictured above)

Ah the weekend.

Then I got to test out my new remote I got for my camera

And once Chenoa got there, we were off to spend the day on the boat.

And this is why I hand the camera off to friends from time to time. :)

When the boat was anchored. This is what we did. And this is how the photos from my last post were taken.

Chenoa and Greer were the only ones who successfully wakeskated.

Only in oklahoma do you get to see skies like this.

<3>

Then I experimented with getting the perfect silhouettes against those gorgeous skies

And then Erich made the most perfect blueberry pancakes the next morning to fuel us on our journey back home. The perfect end to a weekend.
